Here's the good news you've earned by making it through four rooms: cleaning your entire home safely is simpler, cheaper, and less cluttered than the conventional approach.
The industry convinced us we need a different product for every surface, every room, and every type of mess. The result is a cabinet full of bottles, most containing the same basic ingredients in slightly different ratios with different fragrances.
You don't need twenty products. You need five.
01 · Castile soap
- How
- Made through saponification (reacting oil with an alkali). It lifts dirt and grease through surfactant action, and it's biodegradable.
- Dilutions
- All-purpose spray: 1 tbsp per quart of water · Foaming hand soap: 1 part soap to 3 parts water · Floor cleaner: ½ cup per gallon of hot water · Dishes: full strength or slightly diluted
- Careful
- It reacts with vinegar — the acid neutralizes the soap and leaves an oily residue. Use them separately, never mixed. It can also film on glass, so use vinegar for windows and mirrors.
02 · White vinegar
- How
- The acidity cuts mineral deposits, grease, and soap scum. Mildly antimicrobial — effective against many common bacteria, though not a hospital-grade disinfectant.
- Uses
- Glass and mirrors (50/50 with water) · Shower and tub · Hard water deposits (undiluted, let sit, scrub) · Laundry rinse aid (½ cup in the rinse cycle) · Dishwasher rinse aid
- Never
- On natural stone — marble, granite, travertine. The acid etches it; use a pH-neutral cleaner. Never mix with bleach (chlorine gas). Don't mix with castile soap.
03 · Baking soda
- How
- A gentle abrasive and a real deodorizer: it neutralizes odor molecules rather than masking them.
- Uses
- Scrubbing tubs, sinks, stovetops · Oven cleaner (paste, overnight) · Odor absorber (fridge, trash cans, shoes) · Carpet freshener (sprinkle, 15 min, vacuum) · Drain freshener (½ cup, then vinegar, then hot water)
- Limits
- It isn't a sanitizer or disinfectant. It's a mechanical cleaner and deodorizer. That's the job.
04 · Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
- How
- That extra oxygen makes it a powerful oxidizer — it kills bacteria, viruses, and mold spores on contact by breaking down their cell walls.
- Uses
- Surface disinfectant (spray undiluted, 5–10 min, wipe) · Mold treatment (10 min, scrub, rinse) · Stain remover on white/light fabrics · Cutting board sanitizer · Toothbrush sanitizer
- Careful
- Keep it in its dark bottle — it breaks down in light, which is why it comes opaque. Never mix with vinegar: together they create peracetic acid, which irritates skin, eyes, and lungs. Use them sequentially if you want, never combined.
05 · A truly clean all-purpose concentrate
- Why
- The four above cover most needs, but a well-formulated plant-based concentrate brings convenience and effectiveness together — and it collapses your specialized products into one. Your under-sink cabinet goes from cluttered with bottles to one concentrate and a couple of reusable spray bottles.
- The criteria
- Full ingredient transparency · plant-based surfactants · no synthetic fragrance · no quats · no SLS · no formaldehyde releasers. Any product meeting those standards is a good choice.
The method: use it up, replace it clean
People read books like this and go home and throw out every product in the house in a single afternoon. The intention is good. The execution creates unnecessary stress and expense.
You don't have to do this all at once. I'd encourage you not to.
Keep using what you have, and each time a product runs out, replace it with a clean alternative. Within a few months you'll have transitioned your entire home without a single overwhelming trip to the store. It spreads the cost, it lets you test alternatives one at a time, it reduces waste — pouring functional product down the drain isn't great for the environment either — and it makes the whole thing feel manageable.
The five red flags
You don't need a chemistry degree. Just scan for these:
- "Fragrance" or "parfum" without specifics. The trade secret loophole. Skip it.
- Ingredients you can't find any information about. If you can't find a straightforward explanation of what it is and does, that's a flag.
- "Antibacterial" claims. In a home cleaning product this almost always means antimicrobial chemicals you don't need.
- Long ingredient lists for simple products. An all-purpose cleaner should not have 30 ingredients.
- No full ingredient list at all. Only "active ingredients," or nothing — the biggest red flag of all.
Three apps that do the work for you
- Yuka — scans barcodes, scores products on ingredient safety. Green, orange, red.
- Think Dirty — rates ingredients 1 to 10 with sourced explanations.
- EWG's Healthy Living — connected to the Environmental Working Group's Guide to Healthy Cleaning, which rates over 2,500 cleaning products.
None are perfect. They sometimes disagree with each other, and their databases don't cover every product. But using any of them consistently will dramatically increase your awareness of what you're buying.
The budget reality
Let's address this directly: switching does not have to cost more.
White vinegar runs roughly $3. Baking soda about $1. Hydrogen peroxide $1–2. A bar of castile soap $4–5 and it lasts for months. A good concentrate costs more upfront than one bottle of conventional spray — but when one bottle makes 100+ spray bottles, the cost per use is dramatically lower.
Chemical exposure doesn't send you a bill. It sends you symptoms. And those are far more expensive to deal with.
Clean is not a smell
The industry sold us a lie: that clean has a smell. That a house isn't really clean unless it smells like pine or lemon or lavender. That you need a chemical for every surface and a fragrance for every room.
Clean doesn't smell like anything. Clean is the absence of contaminants on your surfaces, in your air, and in the products you invite into your home.
And this isn't about being perfect. It's about knowing the truth and making better choices. Nobody is going to tell you you're a bad parent if you don't throw out every chemical in your house tomorrow. What's in these products matters, the science supports that, and there are alternatives that work. That's the whole message.
One label. One window. One swap.
- Pick one product and read the ingredients. Whatever you use most often. Look up anything you don't recognize.
- Open a window. Today. At least 20 minutes. The single easiest thing you can do for your indoor air, and it costs nothing.
- Replace one product. Just one. The floor cleaner in the nursery, the softener in the laundry room, the plug-in in the bathroom. Pick the one that feels most important to you.
