If there's one room in your house where the stakes of chemical exposure are highest, it's the one where your youngest child sleeps, plays, and spends the most time.
Children are not small adults
This isn't opinion. It's biology. Their vulnerability is greater for four measurable reasons.
Body weight ratio
A baby weighing 15 pounds who crawls across a floor treated with a chemical cleaner absorbs a proportionally much larger dose relative to body weight than a 160-pound adult walking across the same floor in shoes. Toxicology is always about dose relative to body weight, and children are always at a disadvantage.
Developing systems
A child's immune, respiratory, endocrine, and neurological systems are still forming. The same exposure an adult body can process and eliminate may have a more significant impact on systems still under construction. The window of vulnerability is especially wide in the first three years of life.
Behavior patterns
Babies and toddlers put their hands in their mouths constantly. They crawl on floors. They touch every surface they can reach and then touch their faces. According to the EPA's Exposure Factors Handbook, young children have significantly higher hand-to-mouth contact rates than adults — meaning they ingest far more of whatever is on the surfaces they touch.
Breathing zone
An adult's breathing zone is roughly five feet off the ground. A crawling baby's breathing zone is inches from the floor. Heavier-than-air chemicals, including many VOCs from cleaning products, concentrate at floor level.
Your baby is breathing the most concentrated air in the room.
The floor problem
This is the one that changes how most parents think about cleaning.
Your baby crawls on that floor. Their hands press into it, pick up residue, and go straight into their mouths.
Laundry: the hidden exposure
Most parents are thoughtful about what touches their baby's skin directly. Gentle body wash. Fragrance-free diapers. Soft cotton clothing. Then they wash all of that clothing in detergent loaded with synthetic fragrances, optical brighteners, and chemical softeners.
Your baby wears those clothes against their skin all day. They sleep in sheets washed with those products all night. The chemicals don't fully rinse out. They're designed not to. That's how the scent lasts.
"Baby" detergents deserve special scrutiny. Many products marketed specifically for baby clothes still contain synthetic fragrances, just at lower concentrations. "Gentle" and "for sensitive skin" are not regulated claims. Read the ingredient list, not the marketing on the front.
Air fresheners and plug-ins
I'll be direct: there is no scenario in which a plug-in air freshener belongs in a child's bedroom.
Plug-ins work by continuously releasing synthetic fragrance compounds into the air. They contain a heated liquid that vaporizes and disperses, often including phthalates as fragrance carriers, synthetic musks, and various VOCs.
A study published in Environmental Health Perspectives found that homes using air fresheners and plug-in deodorizers had measurably higher levels of certain VOCs, including formaldehyde. The researchers noted the levels were particularly concerning in rooms with limited ventilation — which describes most bedrooms at night.
Your child's bedroom, where they spend 10 to 12 hours a day, should have the cleanest air in your house.
If it smells, find the source and address it. Open a window. Use a HEPA purifier. But don't mask an odor with a device that pumps synthetic chemicals into the air all night long.
Toy cleaning
Parents ask about this constantly. It's simpler than the aisle suggests:
- Hard plastic toys: hot water and a small amount of castile soap or plant-based dish soap. Rinse well. Air dry.
- Soft toys: the same fragrance-free detergent you use for your child's clothes.
- Toys that can't be submerged: wipe with a cloth dampened with diluted plant-based cleaner, then wipe again with a plain damp cloth to remove residue.
You do not need antimicrobial toy sprays. You do not need UV sanitizers for everyday use. You do not need disinfecting wipes. A child's immune system develops partially through exposure to normal environmental microbes. The goal is to remove dirt and grime, not to sterilize every surface your child touches.
The safer nursery checklist

Change the floor cleaner.
Of everything in this course, this is the highest-leverage single change in a home with a baby or toddler. Not because floor cleaner is the most toxic product in your house — but because your child's face is closer to it than yours, for more hours, with fewer defenses.
If you have babies or young children, prioritize the products they're most directly exposed to: floor cleaner, laundry detergent, and anything used in the nursery. Those swaps are worth making immediately. Everything else can wait for the bottle to run out.
