Lesson 1 of 5

Name Your Room

Every founder who has ever scaled a real business has passed through one of two states. You are in one of them right now. You know which one.

The book opens with a diagnosis Italo Campilii learned from his co-founder, John Vargas, who spent twenty-four years inside Apple watching the world's most successful builders cross the same chasm. What looks like a hundred different business problems almost always collapses into one of two diagnostic categories.

Indigestion

"You have more demand than you can fulfill. The phone rings, the inquiries come in, the work backs up. You are turning revenue away. You cannot deliver what you have already sold."

Starvation

"You have capacity but not enough demand. The team is ready. The systems exist. You know you can deliver. The pipeline is not feeding the engine fast enough."

Both states feel like failure. Neither one is. Both are, in the book's words, "the recognizable signature of a founder who has built something real and is now hitting the structural ceiling of doing it without leverage."

The private weight nobody sees

"Friends call you successful. Your family is proud. And you feel like you are sprinting on a treadmill that someone keeps tilting. That gap — between how it looks and how it feels — is not a character flaw. It is the signature of a structure that has fallen behind your ambition."— Chapter One

Why naming your room matters

From the book: "Founders who misdiagnose their state install the wrong solutions for years. The Indigestion founder who thinks she has a marketing problem hires more salespeople and accelerates the collapse. The Starvation founder who thinks he has a delivery problem hires more delivery and burns margin without touching the actual constraint. The diagnosis is everything."

Today's ten-minute action

Write one paragraph naming your room. If your waiting list keeps growing, your nights go to delivery work, and margin is collapsing under high revenue — you are in Indigestion. If your team has capacity, your pipeline is thin, and worse competitors are growing faster — you are in Starvation. Say it out loud. Tomorrow we find your tier.

from the book

"Both states have the same structural answer… First, name yours."
